obama has in the most recent polls? you have some enthusiastic people behind you tonight. but president obama has had a good lead in ohio and now it's been opened up in one poll by nine points. are you concerned about overconfidence? the columbus dispatch ohio poll has obama at 51% and romney at 42%. how crucial is early voting when you look at this this number? >> it's very crucial, ed. although i'm pleased the president is up by nine points. it's important folks come out to vote. the final count is when people cast their ballots and not necessarily by the polls. so we can't get overconfident. it's not over until it's over and that's november 6th. but we can start to vote early and start to show our support for president obama. we can show our support for our federal senator sherrod brown and show our support up and down the ticket here in ohio starting tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. and we are here to make sure that our president knows that we have his back, the same way he's had ours in the state of ohio. >> senator, why do y

i said does obama like you? and there's a lot of people who are going to see that ad and say, i'm in that picture somewhere. i'm a veteran, i'm this kind of person, i'm that kind of person. am i in that list of 47%? the answer, i guess, is yes. >> well, the flip side of what chuck was talking about in terms of the still existent enthusiasm gap on the obama side, on the romney side i think mitt romney has kind of maxed out on the people who are going to vote for him because they're against obama. mitt romney's challenge in this upcoming debate and in the other debates is to show some sense of humanity and empathy that will get some people to vote for him on a positive basis. that's what's missing now. that's the 2% or 3% or 4% that he's missing that he's got to get. he's not going to get any more out of the anti-obama message. he's got to get it out of a pro-romney message, which is exactly why the obama campaign is running that ad that you just showed in colorado and in the other swing states. >> yeah. >> hey, a

and for him to be successful, he must convince obama voters in massachusetts and obama is expected to win by double digits up there, to also vote for him, a republican. susan milligan is a contributing editor to "u.s. news & world report," and michael steele is the former chairman of the republican national committee, also an msnbc political analyst. i'm going to try to look at this down the middle. i saw the whole debate today. i was fascinated. i think david gregory did a hell of a job. like a referee in a boxing match. each candidate had a tough moment or two. here is warren tripped up, i think, when asked to name a republican she could work with. just name a senator or any bunch of them. here is what she said. let's watch. >> can you name some republicans in the senate today that you are able to work with on big issues, substantive issues, that the country faces? >> i think probably richard lugar would be one that would come to mind. >> he's not going to be there. >> he's not going to be there. >> who else could you name, senator? >> that is a problem. let me do this one -- let me

>> do you know that mccain beat obama on election day, and obama got it in early voting. >> things can change overnight with a great debate performance, but again, mark hallprin, time is running out. >> he's still behind in too many places to win. he doesn't have as of today an obvious electoral college path, and he's not going to make it up on the ground with enthusiasm anymore. >> let's bring it kristen welker at the white house for you. by the end of the mow, 30 states are casting early absentee ballots, that includes five battleground states. is the president's team confident they can keep governor romney from closing the gaps as we see in the polls as of today? >> good morning, alex. i think the obama team is confident but they're cautious. they're six weeks until election day. that's a lifetime when it comes to politics. folks have already started to turn out for early voting. we have a graphic of what we've seen so far. it shows that obama campaign supporters are actually leading right now in terms of voter turnout as compared to romney supporters. i've spoken with officials wit
